While this story is quite creepy and macabre, it is actually quite deep. This is the story if you follow the whole version, including hidden.
Before it begins:
Gold has just beaten Red atop Mount Silver, however as his dreams have been vanquished by Gold taking his place as Pokemon Master, Red falls to his death, which is why we never see him again. He walks down the mountain, where his Typholsion dies. He meets his rival at the bottom of the mountain.
As more years pass, Gold becomes much stronger, even gaining a shinny Celebi. It did not take long for him to become unknown. People have surpassed Gold as champion by simply defeating the Elite Four, as he travels the regions. Although people who knew him worry, they must also help new trainers, whom they eventually want to succeed. (As Professor Oak wanted Gold to triumph over Red, he does the same.) Gold eventually dies in a similar manner as Red did.
Now:
He wakes up, not remembering who he is. He uses his lone Cyndaquil to use Flash, showing a blood red room. He walks down a long tunnel to a sign that says: "TURN BACK NOW". He refuses, and must relive what he's done.
As he watches Red jump to his death, he walks down the mountain, he remembers his Typholsion,  and checks on her. He realizes that he cannot remember what she looks like, so she has no face. He has her egg. She dies soon after getting him through the top of the mountain. The baby Cyndaquil hatches, and has continuous nightmares.
He travels through a lonely standstill of the world, exactly as it was when he had to walk down after seeing Red commit suicide. He walks out of the cave, and he meets his rival. It is exactly like their meeting there the first time. The rival's Feraligatr has no face as well, as he couldn't remember what it looked like as well. He remembers the Feraligatr wondering what happened to Typhlosion, as they were rivals as Pokemon. The trainer tells what happened, prompting a battle. He brutally injures Feraligatr with the baby Cyndaquil, and Feraligatr is devastated with the loss of his friend. (Which is why you attack with Nightmare, he will have nightmares over the loss.) Feraligatr also brutally injures Cyndaquil, and the trainer has flashbacks to when they had their first battle, Cyndaquil vs. Totodile. Silver tells him that, "We're even now." as he is angry that all of this happened.
The trainer is saddened, as he remembers most of what has happened. He is suddenly transported to Goldenrod. It is there when he begs for help from his closest friends, but he cannot remember what they looked like. They all tell him, "Who are you kid?".  He realizes that even though they were some of his closet friends, they were doing what they did with any other trainer that challenged them. He teleports back to where he begun. He decides that he is ready for what happens next, and decides to continue with his Cyndaquil. However it dies due to injury from Feraligatr.
He losses his arms and bleeds from his eyes, as he is dying. He obtains his Celebi, which has barely survived and joins him when he was threatened. He sees the fainted memories of other people he used to know, and sees a ghost version of Red. He is reluctant to go near him, in case he is angry over his death. Red wastes no time in waiting for him to speak, as he immediately attacks with his dead Pikachu. It is the only one he thought was worthy to train, and has trained it to a point of it dreaming of escape.
The trainer has no choice but to fight with the injured Celebi. Celebi sacrifices itself so the trainer may survive, and Pikachu tries to escape. Both end up dying, and the trainer sees Red decapitated.
He is just a ghost-like head after this, and travels through his home, where it all began. He tries to leave out of the door, but is stopped by Red. He says, "Goodbye forever..." as the trainer can rest in peace due to facing his demons, but Red cannot as he can only remember his anger for the trainer who ruined his dream/caused him to commit suicide.
The story ends with us seeing that he had been multiple times to his own grave.
 I tried.
